Valedictory Exercises are traditionally held the day before graduation in May and include the announcement of class awards and the presentation of the class gift.

“We are thrilled that Mr. Tinsley has accepted our invitation to speak at Valediction. His sincere interest in this community and humble philanthropic efforts have inspired countless members of the fourth-year class,” said Margaret H. Bolton, chairwoman of the class’ graduation committee. “We look forward to having him be a part of such a momentous occasion.”

A Virginia native, Tinsley is passionate about supporting Charlottesville youth programs. The Boyd Tinsley Fund was established to distribute financial gifts to the Charlottesville City Schools in the areas of music, academics, and tennis. This year, academic gifts went toward the Scholars Program at Charlottesville High School for academic and tutoring assistance for more than 55 students. This assistance is provided by Champion Tutoring, UVa students, CHS teachers and community members. Music scholarships also went toward tuition to music workshops, the purchase of instruments, camps, and travel support as well as music supplies.

“I feel honored that the Class of 2007 has asked me to be the valediction speaker,” said Tinsley. “I am particularly touched to be receiving this accolade in my home town.”

The Boyd Tinsley Tennis Program was established to provide instruction, equipment and transportation to any Charlottesville youth interested in pursuing the sport. Tinsley’s commitment to tennis in Charlottesville has also inspired his recent contribution to construct a new, state-of-the-art tennis facility for the UVa tennis teams.

Tinsley joined Dave Matthews Band in 1991. He released his first solo record, “True Reflections,” in 2003. The Dave Matthews Band will conclude its 2006 summer tour with a two-night stand at the John Paul Jones Arena on Friday and Saturday.
